Interview: Hydrangea

We’re beyond excited to be welcoming the sensational Hydrangea to Corsica Studios on 21st July, an incredible DJ and producer based in France and making beautiful, earthly ripples in the deep and atmospheric techno realms around the world; her personal ethos which can be felt throughout her music being: “Look deeper into nature and you will understand everything better.” We couldn’t agree more.

To immerse yourself in the sounds of Hydrangea is to immerse yourself in nature itself and with the attention given to her music - both productions and mixes - comes a very natural state of inner peace, acceptance and hopefulness. Spiritual techno, we like to call it, infused with atmospheric soundscapes and often deep, rolling, dub-like grooves grounding you like the roots of a tree. Pay a visit to the likes of Annulled Music and Natch Records / Elements to delve through her multiple releases, or of course settle into her very beautiful podcast recorded just for On the 5th Day to hear what we mean.

Hydrangea’s deep, contemplative sound, her talent for storytelling and the solidarity of her vision which radiates through everything that she does makes her a perfect artist for an On the 5th Day techno tale, and it was just a case of waiting for the perfect opportunity to lock her in. Svreca, who will make his second On the 5th Day residency appearance later this month, shares the same sentiment when it comes to Hydrangea, which is why we wholeheartedly agreed she belonged on this line up; also why her music has found itself on the Semantica Records label. We know he is is thrilled to be sharing a line up with her and to be seeing her making her London debut.

As if her musical talents weren’t enough, Hydrangea is also a photographer and graphic designer, producing the visual work for the Inveins podcast series which captures the beauty of nature in its trust essence, as well as working on artwork for multiple releases and projects. We highly recommend checking her out on Instagram for a taster of her work.

Tell us about your relationship with music? Has it always played a role in your life?

It is indeed the essential cradle of my life. Being from a family of music lovers, this is since my birth that I’m immersed into it. At home, we love more than anything to maintain our musical culture and constantly discover new artists, new genres whatever they are. Now, I can’t imagine myself living a single day without listening to music, everything I do is made with music.

Regarding electronic music, I remember that at the time when everyone was going to bed, I took the opportunity to take my CD player with my headphones and danced long hours in my room by imagining myself already in parties ahah.

Can you think back to the time when you first began transforming inspiration into action and making music. Where and how did it all start for you?

At the time like today, I always draw my inspiration in the same way. I spend a lot of time in nature marveling at the beauty of my surroundings. There are then images that remain anchored in my mind and, when I'm in front of my computer, I just have to close my eyes to see these landscapes scrolling again. This is indirectly a form of meditation and escape for me, constantly present at any time of the day.

What made you decide to take the leap?

I was very reluctant to make music. I thought there were already very talented artists made for that and that it was better for me to stay a listener. And then one day, I wanted to try it out with curiosity and, you know the rest :)

We know that for you, immersing yourself in nature is the perfect meditative experience, and we couldn’t agree more. Every single mix or track we’ve heard from you radiates this feeling - tranquility, connection, a beautiful warm earthliness that is totally soothing and very grounding. Because of this, your music has touched the hearts and souls of people all over the world - how does that make you feel now, did you imagine your work would have such a profound impact on people?

Absolutely not, it's for me something immeasurable. This is the most beautiful gift that an artist can receive and has no price. I’m so happy to be able to connect musically with people even if I have to admit that I still have trouble to realise that my music can be enjoyed by other people. Being constantly looking for myself with regular challenges in order to evolve, I’m eternally dissatisfied :)

We love the fluidity between your work in music, photography and graphic design… all illustrating the beauty of nature which is a running theme. Do you ever steer away from nature at all and gain inspiration in other ways?

Nature is and will remain my one and only inspiration. As I said before, when I make music and close my eyes, those landscapes scrolling in my head appear.

It’s always there, present and close, but so different every day, that's why it fascinates me so much.

We’ve read in a previous interview that you’re a little shy as a person… what advice would you give to anyone who shares this quality and is perhaps struggling to pursue creativity, or is fearful of the limelight doing so might bring?

The shyness is a delicate thing that is not easy to manage every day. For me, playing in the gigs is really the best way to deal with it. In this way, I can launch my own challenges and then, in the end, I realise that it was not so insurmountable, quite the contrary! I always leave my gigs so happy and satisfied for having overcome my fears.

As someone who is so connected to nature, what’s your view on technology and social media in today’s world? How do you manage the balance?

Technology and social media are part of our daily lives and are a great tool for sharing our music (or others'). We can’t deny that without it, many of us would not be here today. All you have to do is to make good use of it, with the right balance, as it can make you feel more and more hooked and disconnected from reality. This has been my case for a long time, that’s why I’m moving away from it more and more for the sake of my sanity. I try to take breaks and get away from this virtual world to reconnect with nature, because it's always where I get the most healthy and positive energies. There is a lot to say about this, it's a fact that I study in books every day to find the right balance and the healthiest way of life possible.

Is there a track or compilation that you’re most happy or proud of? If so why?

Having never thought of arriving here, I’m the most happy and proud on Earth of each of my releases, since they are the ones who brought me here.

Where would you say you are in terms of having artistic self confidence?

Not at the top, I must admit. There are so many talented artists, I easily fall into the trap of comparing myself to others and find that my music is not worth listening to. But these same artists inspire me a lot and bring me a lot of new ideas too, so in the end I think it's something positive because it allows me to question myself and evolve constantly.

Do you like experimenting with new pieces of equipment, or do you prefer to stick to what you know works?

Of course I like to constantly discover new possibilities for sound research, but in the end, I always come back to my basics. My wishlist is huge (and expensive ahah) but since I bought this recorder for example, I burst out and that is enough for me. In my opinion, it is not necessary to have a whole bunch of machines, but the bare minimum which is sure to be used and manipulated.

The dance floor is a ritualistic place of freedom and healing for a lot of people. Do you enjoy going out and letting your hair down? If so where do you like to go?

Well when I'm at home, I never go out at parties. It's not the desire that is missing sometimes, but living away from everything, it's a bit more complicated. So I had to find the right balance of life and staying in my home - spending hours working, discovering new artists and taking care of my plants / my animals ahah.

That said, I love traveling abroad and visiting friends, these are the only times I go out and spend unforgettable moments :)

How are you feeling ahead of your appearance for On the 5th Day? It’s set to be a seriously beautiful night and we're beyond excited to welcome you!

Oh, I can’t be more excited and impatient! I still don’t realise that it’s true and that you give me the opportunity to play with artists that I admire enormously!

In addition, I never had the opportunity to come to Corsica so, it will be even more a discovery for me, having heard only wonderful opinions about this place and your events.

There is no doubt that it will be a wonderful evening and will remain engraved in our memory :)

Thank you, Hydrangea!
